Thus, War for the Overlord went for the only title that it could use: “Underlord”. There is another rival series that already uses “Lord” in the player character’s title. “Keeper” is a copyrightable phrase, and Electronic Arts can be very litigious. The player character is canonically named Oberon, but this name is never uttered anywhere in the base campaign. Several missions into the campaign, the player will come across other occurrences that foreshadow certain plot twists and expositions. For one, the narrator is now actually a character, rather than a disembodied commentator making a one-way conversation (though the player character still remains a silent one). However, there are tell-tale signs that the story is more than that. Players that recall the setting of the Dungeon Keeper titles may find that War for the Overworld is very much telling the same story, at least in the beginning. Above all, the player character is to go on another campaign against the Overworld and anyone else that would challenge it for dominance. He will be teaching, advising, chiding and berating the player for all sorts of things. Thus, the aforementioned voice has taken the player’s Underlord – canonically named “Oberon” but never referred to as such – under his instruction. In the player character’s case, it lost much of its powers and memories. That all said, an Underlord is practically an immortal creature, albeit one who still loses things upon death. An Underlord – and there are others – has the purpose of overthrowing the Overworld. The player character is one of them, having been purportedly revived by the character that happens to be a disembodied voice. “Underlords” are examples of such beings. Even if their anchors to the mortals’ reality are severed, they are merely sent back to the Aether, and can return again. After all, when these beings can just pluck mortals in their domains and toss them about, or hit them with barrages of magic that come from seemingly nowhere, it would be hard to say “no” to such entities. They control the mortals, either through imposition of their will or through awe. The cycles are perpetrated by the “Aether-born”, which are practically god-like beings. The Underworld is all manner of maleficent beings, whereas the Overworld is sanctimonious and pompous – arrogant enough to call themselves “Imperial” and “holy”. This continent has seen cycles of violence between the forces of the Overworld and those of the Underworld. The game is set on a continent in what is presumably a fantastical world. However, the developers’ dogged determination and fan feedback have contributed much to the improvement of the game. The War for the Overworld is one such example when it launched. Even if they reach the end, the results might be no better than a decent recycling of what has been done. They may have rocky development phases, no thanks to the aspiring developers underestimating the complexities of making a game. In many cases of this sort, quite a number of them would fall below lofty expectations. One of these responses is the kind that is about “reviving” the classics. Rather, this intro passage will be about the responses to the aforementioned ‘travesties’. If you barely remember Bullfrog’s games, you really should consider the tutorial level and the sandbox level. That said, there would be no further ranting about their business decisions here – there are a lot of them already, and they are very tiresome. There have been no few cases of this or that corporation claiming the rights to so-called “classics” and doing nothing much with them – or doing something awful, like what Electronic Arts did with Dungeon Keeper.
